Newby Hall & Gardens near Ripon.

These great gardens at Newby Hall date from 1691
and have changed over the centuries with the current design dating from the 1920s. At this time Major Compton influenced by his friend Lawrence Johnston who designed Hidcote Manor Gardens created a new garden which now covers over 40 acres.
The gardens now comprise a series of rooms in the Arts and Crafts style accessed by the main lawned garden walk which has double gerbaceeous borders leading down to the River Ure.
In the 'rooms' you will find a Rose Garden, Sylvia's Garden, the White Garden and Beacon Garden, with other areas including the Water Garden, Woodland Garden, Orchard Garden. An immense Rock Garden dating from 1914 has been restored recently.
Newby Hall is also open and was originally designed by Sir Christopher Wren. The Hall was later enlarged and adapted by John Carr and subsequently Robert Adam. There is an amazing Dolls House Collection  which must not be missed!
