Witley Court & Gardens near Kidderminster
Stunning gardens surround an extravagant historic house in ruins
Witley Court and Garden is a stunning place to visit set amongst beautiful scenery in the heart of Worcestershire. The extravagant Italianate historic house is now in ruins, caused by fire in the 1930s. It has been made safe by English Heritage .
No expense was spared by the previous owners who remodelled the house and gardens over the years.
The gardens too have an Italian feel and were designed with the help of William Nesfield. There are parterres to the east of the house which have recently restored, and further parterres to the south of the house.
The stunning Perseus and Andromeda Fountain is the centrepiece of the main South Garden which has been restored and gives stunning displays on the hour.
One can see the remains and walk through the Orangery where camellias still grow.
There are more informal areas too, with woodland and lakeside walks bordered by Camellias and rhododendrons.
The Parish Church within the grounds has an exceptional interior and is also Italianate in its design. The panels were painted by Antonio Bellucci.
There is a good tearoom (not managed by English Heritage).
