Anglesey Abbey Gardens in Autumn

Anglesey Abbey and Gardens, Cambridge

The garden at Anglesey Abbey was developed by the 1st Lord Fairhaven from 1926 and has become one of the British Isles most beautiful 20th century gardens.

Anglesey Abbey and Grounds - More of a park this is one of the National Trust's most well known properties.
There are tree lined avenues and walks which form the framework for hidden, more formal gardens (4 small gardens) including the dahlia garden, rose garden and a semi-circular herbaceous border. Lord Fairhaven's impressive collection of statuary is positioned throughout the gardens.
A large collection of snowdrops at Anglesey Abbey has been established on the eastern side which is dedicated to plants giving winter interest.
The Abbey may have started out as a hospital in 1135 but by the early 13th Century had been converted into an Augustinian priory. In this remote spot, a small community of monks followed their quiet life of prayer and contemplation until the priory was dissolved by Henry VIII in 1536. The priory ruins form part of the present house which was built in the 17th century.
