Go and enjoy one of England’s finest gardens at Spetchley Park. This is also where you will see one of the finest collections of Peonies in Britain.

At Spetchley Park Gardens you can enjoy the fantastic vistas and stunning architecture that not only inspired Edward Elgar to write one of his great compositions from the gardeners cottage but was also home to convalescing American pilots during World War 2.
This is also where you will see one of the finest collections of Peonies in Britain.
You will not find manicured borders and in fact some of the garden is becoming overgrown but there is a magic not found elsewhere.
The wonderful display of spring bulbs in April and May, together with flowering trees and shrubs. 
In May and June one of the largest private collections of peonies in the Country come to life. The peonies were collected by plant hunters such as Ernest Wilson for Ellen Willmot the famous Victorian horticulturist who is said to have cultivated more than 100,000 plants.
She developed the garden and plantings here after her sister Rosa married Lord Berkeley and her legacy can still be seen in the gardens.

In June great collection of roses come to life throughout the gardens whilst July, August and September reveal colourful herbaceous borders. This is a garden for all seasons and a wonderful family day out.

We have placed the garden in our Arboretum section as there are a wonderful collection of trees so loved by Elgar.
Having explored the gardens you can enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the tea room where you can get light lunches and afternoon teas or, for the more adventurous, walk around the 150 acre deer park with its herd of red and fallow deer.

Who designed Spetchley Park Gardens?
Ellen Willmott, the renowned horticulturalist and plants woman, was instrumental in helping her sister, Rose Berkeley, design and plant the garden and so, heavily influencing the existing planting structures. She was the first lady recipient of the RHS's Victorian Medal of Honour.


What is the best time to visit Spetchley Park Garden?
We would suggest May to June although it is worth visiting any time during the opening season.

How long should I allow for my visit?
At least 3 hours but people with interest in plants should allow longer.
