Greyfriars House and Garden, Worcester

The walled garden at Greyfriars pays homage to what stood before it – George's Yard, a row of 10 affordable houses which were demolished in 1955 and recycled to create what is now this tranquil outdoor space in the heart of Worcester city centre. Chimney pots have been used as plant pots, and the old bricks have been used to build the gazebo.

In the spring, enjoy snowdrops, daffodils, and colourful tulips in raised circular flowerbeds, as well as magnolia and wisteria on the terrace. Summer brings bursts of colour from the charming yellow begonia, and roses reach up and climb the walls of the timber-framed house. In these warmer months, visitors can relax on the garden terrace with a drink and a slice of homemade cake from the Old Oak Cafe, or pack a picnic and find a sun-drenched piece of lawn. Have a wander, play a garden game and make the most of summer in the city.

During autumn, the gardeners harvest the fruits of their labour, with a crop of pears, figs and quince. Look out for the robinia tree, which glows gold with autumn foliage of deep reds, vibrant oranges and golden browns. In winter, pots are wrapped to protect them from the cold, fallen leaves are cleared and some are collected to create piles of leaf mulch, for use the following year.
