Hampton Court Castle and Gardens - Herefordshire

Welcoming visitors from spring to autumn, the Castle and its gardens have been through many transformations over the years, all of which add to its own unique history and charm.

The Formal Gardens at Hampton Court Castle are a delight for any gardener to visit, with a highly acclaimed organic Kitchen Garden, which is home to many heritage varieties and flowerbeds full of colour and scent. It provides a feast for all the senses.

The South Garden, with slow moving canals of water flowing around island pavilions, is the ideal location for those looking to relax. With pleached lime avenues leading through to the 160 year old Wisteria Arch, colourful herbaceous borders and eye-catching sculptures, there is much to enjoy here. A particular highlight is the Dutch Garden, notable for its tranquility, with its beautiful symmetry and striking water feature.

The garden rewards those that like to explore, with a Magnolia Path leading onto the Maze, which is always a favourite for children. It is made of over 1,000 yew trees and at its centre stands a Gothic Tower with commanding views over the estate. From there visitors can make their way to the Sunken Garden with ferns and lush green foliage surrounding a waterfall.

The South Lawns lead onto the Joseph Paxton designed Orangery Cafe, supplied with the finest local produce, including that from the Kitchen Garden where visitors can pause for lunch or afternoon tea.

A tour of the medieval Castle, which dates back to Henry IV and is earlier than Hampton Court Palace by almost a hundred years, is not to be missed.

How long does it take to visit?

When is the best time to visit?
The Gardens are open from spring to autumn and there is always something different to explore throughout each season, from the delicate spring blossom, the beauty of the Wisteria Arch, herbaceous borders blooming into life in the summer and the golden colours of autumn trees.

Hampton Court Castle is based in Herefordshire, near the Welsh border. The main entrance is on the A417, 500 metres from its junction with the A49 between Hereford and Leominster.
