Water Gardens to visit near me

water gardenThere are many water gardens in the Britain, many where water is a natural feature of the garden and others manmade. Very often water was diverted from rivers to ponds and lakes. We feature gardens where water is used to enhance the design.

Many of the early water gardens featured canals rather than lakes, Westbury Court a formal Dutch Garden escaped from the grip of landscape designers like Capability Brown. Forde Abbey also has a long canal behind the Abbey which looks beautiful throughout the year.

Perhaps one of the best examples of a landscape garden with lake was not by Capability Brown but by Henry Hoare at Stourhead. This is a stunning example which is difficult to surpass.

Harold Peto was a great designer of Water Gardens and one of his best examples is at Buscot House, with a long canal with bridges leading through an avenue of trees to a lake.

Cascades were also a feature and the one at Chatsworth House is a great example. More recently the cascade at Alnwick is a modern take and well worth visiting.
