Benthall Hall Gardens

Benthall Hall and Garden Broseley - National Trust

Benthall Hall is a historic 16th-century mullioned manor house surrounded by a 19th-century garden planted by Botanist George Maw, featuring an extensive collection of crocuses. A great day out and place to visit in Shropshire

Benthall Hall and Garden is situated on a plateau above the gorge of the River Severn.

Benthall's 19th-century garden was planted by George Maw, a passionate bulb collector and breeder, consequently there are fabulous crocus displays to be seen in the garden throughout the spring and autumn.

Based on his collection of over 3,000 plant species, Maw published 'A Monograph of the Genus Crocus' in 1886. The book is illustrated by his own watercolours and brings together 10 years of research gathered from his plant collecting expeditions around the world.

There's also an intimate and carefully restored plantsman's garden at Benthall, an old kitchen garden and interesting Restoration church.

Take time to step inside Benthall Hall to view its historic interior.
