Fulham Palace Gardens

Fulham Palace and Gardens, London

Discover the Tudor and Victorian Fulham Palace, London’s second-oldest botanic garden. Explore 13 acres of Grade II listed garden, including a walled garden, ancient trees and spacious lawns. With free entry to both the garden and museum.

A hidden gem in west London, the Fulham Palace site spans 13 acres and has over 1,300 years of history as the former country residence of the Bishops of London.
The garden reflects centuries of horticultural innovation, from Tudor parterres introduced by Bishop Grindal to the remarkable plant collecting efforts of Bishop Compton. Compton worked with early botanists to introduce a range of exotic species to England, including magnolia, azalea and even the first coffee tree known to be grown in the country.
Today, the site is recognised as London's second oldest botanic garden, and the walled garden has been carefully restored to celebrate this legacy. It offers a rich blend of historic and productive planting. Visitors will find a knot garden inspired by the Arts and Crafts movement and planted in the colours of Bishop Blomfield's coat of arms, alongside a kitchen garden, orchard, vinery, pond, chicken coop and bee hives. Organically grown produce and cut flowers are available from a traditional market barrow run by volunteers.
The wider garden includes sweeping lawns, herbaceous borders, mature trees and a natural children's play area built from wood gathered during works across the site. Among its highlights is a holm oak believed to be more than 500 years old, recognised as one of London's Great Trees.
The gardens are open daily and free to explore, offering a peaceful green escape just a short walk from the city.
Beyond the garden, visitors can explore the historic Fulham Palace itself, a fascinating house that blends Tudor, Georgian and Victorian architecture. Once the country retreat of the Bishops of London, the Palace now houses a free museum telling the story of its history, residents and role in the development of the Church of England. Alongside the museum, the Palace features a shop and café.
Fulham Palace is managed by Fulham Palace Trust, an independent charity. Through conservation, education and community engagement, the Trust works to protect and share this remarkable historic site with all who visit.
