St James Park

St James Park

St James Park in Central London - once a marsh but now with fine gardens.

St James Park - This lovely garden was once a swampy meadow before Henry Vlll built a Palace on it. He then turned the swamp into a nursery for deer but it remained wild until Charles ll employed Le Notre who had designed the Versailles Gardens at Paris, to lay it out in walks and flower beds.
It was a favourite place for the Merry Monarch to meet Nell Gwynne and it was he who introduced the wildfowl.
Today St James is one of the smaller Royal Parks but perhaps the prettiest with lakes and wildfowl.
