Old Rectory Garden, Farnborough - John Betjeman

The delightful gardens at the Old Rectory in Farnborough, Berkshire are open under the NGS. John Betjeman once lived here.

High up in the Berkshire Downs and 800 feet above sea level is The Old Rectory, Farnborough which was once home to John Betjeman. There is all year round interest in the 4 acre garden starting with magnolias and daffodils in the Spring followed by seasonal borders in several areas including the Pool Garden.
The beautiful historic house did not always match up to its looks and until 1955 did not have heat or electricty - and that covered the time when John Betjamen lived there between 1945 and 1951.
Reference Financial Times - A visiting Evelyn Waugh described it in blunt terms: “lightless, stuffy, cold”.
In the local church opposite the Garden is a Stain Glassed Window created by his friend John Piper.

Garden open several times under NGS, also groups by appointment
