Gelli Uchaf near Llandeilo
• Created gradually over 30 years by the current owners, the garden together with the wildflower meadows, ponds, and stream at Gelli Uchaf are part of an 11-acre smallholding surrounding what was a traditional C17th derelict Welsh longhouse when Julian and Fiona first saw it.
• One of just 40 global gardens to feature in Noel Kingsbury and Claire Takacs's 2022 ground-breaking book "Wild – The Naturalistic Garden".
• The garden makes use of the sloping upland landscape to accommodate many distinct garden areas with diverse micro-climates, but a guiding theme is layered planting and a desire to incorporate favourite flowers, including many natives, for as long a season as possible.
Millions of spring bulbs feature in the garden from snowdrops with our collection of distinctive Welsh origin forms, through crocus and a large range of daffodils including many historic varieties
Over 50 different types of our garden-worthy snowdrop varieties for sale at prices no higher than £7 for any visitors to the garden this year
• In midsummer, the meadows become an increasingly diverse floral tapestry, and in late summer and autumn, hydrangeas, late flowering perennials, and autumn colour signal the beginning of the annual cycle here as many cyclamen begin to bloom.
• All of the many insect-friendly flowers we grow help to support a very diverse insect population, and in recent times a number of home-made hives have become occupied by local origin honey bees.
• There are many unusual trees and shrubs throughout areas of the garden, lots having been grown from seed.
• A unique home-constructed shepherd's hut at the top of our upper wildflower hay meadow, gives stunning views over the hilly landscape of North Carmarthenshire.
• Our visitors, whether individuals or the small groups of garden visitors we can accommodate, seem to find much inspiration from time spent in this magical place, in what is a very personal and peaceful day out.
Open for pre-arranged visits for charity for the National Garden Scheme, since 2010, from February 1st to October 31st, as on our website's "Visiting the garden" page. Home-made refreshments are available if pre-booked, or you're welcome to bring a picnic.
• If you can't visit us in person, then do look at our website or YouTube channel for a feel for what this upland garden in West Wales is really like.
