Take 3’ of my favourite Gardens In September - Paul Leitch, Editor
September and early October is a great time to visit gardens and 3 of my favourites at this time of year are:-
Aberglasney Gardens, Carmarthenshire – The gardens will be looking gorgeous at this historic garden not only with seasonal flowers but also early Autumn Tints. Aberglasney is one of Wales' finest gardens, and at its heart lies a fully restored Elizabethan Cloister Garden that is the only surviving example of its kind in the UK today. Beyond this, visitors can explore 10 acres of over 20 different garden styles from formal to woodland, right through to exotic and modern.
Plus a traditional Tearoom serving light lunches and teas.
Great Chalfield Manor, Wiltshire – One of the National Trusts hidden gems, the gardens come alive in mid September to mid October with dazzling displays of Salvias and Michaelmas daisies.
The moated Manor House was built around 1465 and fully restored in 1905. The gardens were designed by Alfred Parsons RA, PRWS in 1905-1912 with an Arts and Crafts influence.
The Courts garden another National Trust gem is minutes away.
Waterperry Gardens, Oxfordshire – Late Summer Borders with colourful displays including masses of Michaelmas daisies. Established by Beatrix Havergal in the 1930’s, the 8 acre ornamental gardens have one one of the country’s most beautiful herbaceous borders, with formal knot and rose gardens, water lily canal, alpine garden and riverside walk. You can also find a great tearoom, shop plus plant sales.
