Upton House Garden near Banbury

The delightful gardens at Upton House surrounds a fine stone House built in 1695.

At Upton House and Garden a large lawn leads to an amazing series of terraces which tumble down to a reflection pool. One of of the terraces houses the National collection of asters, best from mid August onwards.  The terrace also has a large kitchen garden which mirrors how the garden would have looked in the 18th century.

Double herbaceous borders run down to the pool and two small formal gardens one of which is a yew enclosed rose garden. There is a yew walk and an interesting 1930s water garden designed by one of the earliest female garden designers Kitty Lloyd Jones.

The gardens cover a large area and because of the resources which would be required do not live up to their full potential to be one of Britain's most remarkable gardens. The gardening team and volunteers do a great job but perhaps the National Trust need to look again at the opportunities here.

Make sure you go inside the house with its fine rooms housing one of the largest private collections of art in Britain.
Editor's choice - a great garden although relatively unknown.
