Budlake Old Post Office Garden, near Killerton House
Visit a beautiful cottage garden near to Killerton House
We like to feature some of the smaller gardens in Britain, especially cottage gardens and this one at Budlake Post Office near Killerton is a real delight. In the early 1950s when rationing was still in force it was put down entirely to vegetables and fruit by the Skerrett family, who also had a pig and chickens. The pig was fed the remains of the vegetables instead of being composted. Rationing ceased in 1954 and since then much of the garden has been changed back to a mixed cottage style which would have been popular at that time.
The garden is a real delight and just shows how much can be done on a small plot. The pig stye still remains as do some of the original buildings. It is maintained organically by a team of National Trust Volunteers.
